Why Walking Might Save Your Life and Your Business
Every day businesses are spending vast amounts of money on their sickening workforce. Statistics show that depression and stress related illness is on the increase. If there was a way to reduce your business expenses cheaply and easily wouldn't you want to know about it.
A report published by the British charity MIND has shown that getting exercise in the countryside is as effective if not more so than medication for people who are depressed. This is amazing because such a simple thing that is so easy to do could have a profound effect in the mental well-being of us all.
However before you get in your landscape designer to put a path around the patch of grass in front of your office here are some tips for making this green therapy more effective.
Tip 1. Take a good length of time for the walk Part of the point of this therapy is that it involves exercise. A simple stroll around a park will lift your spirits a little but for some really good results it needs to be some long and challenging exercise. A long walk, over say a day, is going to be far more effective than a short stroll. Of course you should check out the health of your workers before forcing them to take a twenty mile walk. Make the exercise appropriate to the group in question.
Tip 2. Go to a wilderness area No doubt walking along country lanes on a sunny day will help but for real impact you need to get away from the normal things of life so you can experience the full force of nature. I'm not advocating a mountaineering expedition but just a wilderness where you can get away from roads and civilisation for a day.
Tip 3. Leave the electronics at home Mobile phones, blackberries, PDAs, etc. These should be banned for the duration of the day. Carry one or two mobile phone for emergencies but that is all. I have nothing against technology but sometimes it gets in the way of a bigger experience.
If you want to get some green therapy for your staff then there are many organisations that can take you for a walk into the great outdoors in a safe and challenging way.
